Recommended Garden Tools
I first started gardening decades ago on the deck of my apartment, expanded to a community garden plot, and bought the house and empty yard which has become my own personal “forever garden.” So to say that I’ve spent a lot of money on soil, plants, tools, landscaping hardware and garden gadgetry would be an enormous understatement! Along the way, I’ve made plenty of mistakes and wasted some money, but I’ve also made purchases which are truly life changing in the garden. In no particular order, here are some of my recommended garden tools. Some are affiliate links but my ultimately goal is to save you time and money.
The ultimate garden gloves
I am rough on gloves and these are – hands down – my absolute favorites. Water resistant, flexible, VERY durable, comfortable and breathable. The velcro strap to keep dirt out just clinches it. Get the right size and you might even forget you have gloves on.
steel hose
I have bought more hoses than any other item. Some are too heavy and others too fragile to be dragged around my 100 ft yard. I finally bought this kind and I will never go back. It’s light weight, flexible, easy to haul around and so far has been sturdier than a cloth covered pocket hose. My only caveat – watch your feet – you don’t want to step on it.
Serious Rose gloves
I have at least 8 rose bushes, a lot of trellised raspberry bushes around the property and the scars to prove it. I tried numerous gauntlet style rose gloves and disliked them all, until I found these from Heirloom Roses. Most rose gloves have a leather gauntlet and cloth hand covering which is SO DUMB – prickers like hands too! But not these – the whole glove is soft supple leather, and they are a dream to work in. Now the only scratches I have are from the cats.
FISKARS FOREVER
There are an endless assortment of garden tool brands out there, and I learned early on that they are NOT equal. If you want to just start with quality and build a tool collection that will last you for years and years, you can’t go wrong with Fiskars. I have tools that have dealt with my punishing routine for ten years at this point. My favorites? The weeder is actually FUN. We use the loppers so often we have two pairs so we don’t have to share. And I pretty much have the hand pruners on me everywhere I go in the yard.
And more to come!
