Sowing the Seeds

This summer, I gave myself the gift of stepping back from full-time work. For the first time in decades, I could garden on nature’s rhythm instead of a meeting calendar. No more staring out the window on a perfect day, trapped on Zoom until five. I woke up and followed the weather, my energy, and the gardens themselves. Without the 40-hour grind, I tackled bigger improvements, reclaimed forgotten corners, and—best of all—had time to simply sit and enjoy the beauty I’ve worked so hard to grow.

It wasn’t all easy. The season threw everything at me: a soaking, mushroom-prone spring, a brutally hot and stubbornly dry summer, and an endless parade of creatures treating my flowers and vegetables as their personal buffet. But even through the setbacks, it felt like a dream summer. Hard work, yes—but joyful work, and work on my own terms.

The biggest gift, though, was the breathing room. I slowed down enough to ask myself some hard but exciting questions: What do I want to do with the rest of my precious life? I’m not finished working—but what kind of work do I actually want?

The more time I spent outside, the clearer the answer became. Retirement and social security aren’t promised, but what I can promise myself is a future I actually want to live. I feel myself slowly detaching from the technology that paid my bills for decades. It feeds my belly but not my soul. Instead, I catch myself daydreaming about spending my best hours in the garden: growing flowers, designing spaces, chasing light through a lens, and capturing the quiet magic that blooms right outside my door.

Having a taste of that future changed everything. Out of it came this website—a new chapter, the roots of Flowerwise Garden Studio. It’s a place where I can merge creativity, gardening, and photography, while sharing what I’ve learned with others who love flowers too.

This is just the start. The seeds are planted, and a future full of blooms and possibilities is already pushing up through the soil. I’m glad you’re here to watch it grow.
